4 Reasons You May Need Periodontal Disease Treatment

Looking for information on periodontal disease treatment? Whether you know for sure that you have gum disease or just think you have gum disease, it is essential that you make a plan for treating your gum disease. Healthy gums should be firm to the touch and pale pink in color. Gums that are not healthy tend to be swollen, tender to the touch and red in color. If you think you have gum disease, know that the longer you wait, the more difficult it will be to treat your gum disease. This makes time of the utmost importance.

Causes and risk factors of periodontal disease

Plaque that is left on the teeth too long is what leads to a periodontal disease diagnosis. This is why it is essential for everyone to brush their teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once a day to remove any built-up plaque that may be existing on the teeth. Once plaque is allowed to harden and build on the teeth, it will begin to fill up with bacteria and eventually turn into tartar. Too much tartar leads to a gingivitis diagnosis, the mildest form of periodontal disease.

Risk factors that can make it worse include smoking, being overweight, taking certain medications, inadequate nutrition, being diagnosed with certain diseases like diabetes, having dry mouth and abusing substances.

Four reasons for periodontal disease treatment

The following is a list of four reasons why someone may be in need of periodontal disease treatment?:

#1 – To save teeth

When someone is diagnosed with periodontal disease, they will need to get treatment in order to prevent tooth loss. Since our teeth are meant to last our entire lifetime, it is essential that we do everything we can in order to save our teeth. If someone does happen to lose one or more of their teeth, they will need to find a tooth replacement option so that they can once again have a healthy mouth.

#2 – To get rid of disease-causing bacteria

Treating periodontal disease allows for the removal of all disease-causing bacteria in the mouth. When the mouth is free of harmful bacteria it is once again considered to be a healthy mouth.

#3 – To improve oral health

When an experienced dental professional treats one of their patients for periodontal disease, they are fixing all of the negative things that are happening to their teeth and gums due to the disease.

#4 – To improve overall health

According to Harvard Health, people with periodontal disease have been found to be at higher risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, pregnancy complications and dementia.
