Is It Safe to Have a Professional Teeth Whitening Treatment?

Adults continue to be intrigued by the prospect of teeth whitening and how it can restore smiles. If you do not like the color of your teeth or are embarrassed by stains, your dentist can help. You should learn everything you can about this procedure and whether it makes sense for you. You may be concerned about possible harmful effects. The good news is that your dentist will have your health and well-being in mind during this procedure.

Why people do teeth whitening

Maintaining the natural color of teeth is not a simple goal to achieve. Poor habits such as not brushing or smoking cigarettes can stain teeth. Discoloration can also occur from eating and drinking certain foods and beverages. Yellow and brown teeth can be embarrassing and even hamper a person’s self-esteem. People with unsightly teeth may not want to smile or even speak in public. Whitening processes can revive the attractive color of teeth and improve a person’s appearance.

The process of in-office whitening

Many dentists have the knowledge and training to do teeth whitening treatments in the office. Technology is allowing these processes to become more common in offices everywhere. Professional whitening uses a highly concentrated application of hydrogen peroxide gel, along with heat or light. The dentist will put the gel on a mouthpiece and place it over the patient’s teeth. The light or heat activates the compound and helps it penetrate the enamel layer quickly.

It usually takes about an hour for this treatment to produce visible results. Patients can enjoy getting teeth several shades whiter. Only one or two visits are required for in-office procedures. The effects can last up to five years or more. Patients can then return to the office for additional whitening treatments.

The effects on the teeth

Hydrogen peroxide is a strong compound. The molecules can quickly break down the molecules that cause staining on teeth. However, if it is on the teeth too long, it can cause sensitivity issues. Fortunately, the dentist is aware of how long the hydrogen peroxide should be on the patient’s teeth. Once the mouthpiece is removed, the dentist will wipe off the teeth to ensure that no additional gel remains.

Other treatments

When used as a dentist directs, other teeth whitening methods can also be effective. These, too, should not pose risks to a person’s health if used correctly. Though take-home trays stay on the person’s teeth overnight, there is a lower concentration of hydrogen peroxide. Other take-home gels use other less potent ingredients. The dentist will tell the patient how long to wear the trays and when the treatment should end.

Feel good about changing the color of your teeth

Too much hydrogen peroxide can have negative effects on your teeth. You can take comfort to know that your dentist will oversee your treatment. You should not have to worry about having ill effects from the treatment. In fact, the results can help you achieve your goals of having the attractive smile you have been looking for.
