When Are Fillings Used as a Dental Restoration?

Like many people, you may have gotten dental restoration before. There are many types of treatments you could receive, depending on the issues you have. Fillings are common for children and adults alike. If you have never had one, it may be helpful to understand how they work.

The importance of good oral health

Patients who take good care of their mouth, teeth and gums may never need any type of dental restoration. People of all ages should brush with a soft-bristled brush and fluoride-based toothpaste at least twice a day. This will keep teeth healthy and strong by staving off decay. Flossing daily will remove bacteria from gums and teeth. Also, visiting the dentist at least twice a year will help patients establish good habits and address issues before they get worse.

A description of fillings for dental restoration

A filling dental restoration restores the function and form of missing tooth structure because of decay or other damage. Fillings can be made of various types of materials. In previous decades, dentists used metals such as gold or silver amalgam to fill damaged teeth. In more recent years, ceramic, porcelain or composite resin have become more common. These blend in with the tooth and do not stand out in the same way as metal fillings do.

For cavities

The most frequent use of dental fillings is for tooth decay. When people neglect brushing and other good oral hygiene, cavities can develop. These threaten the tooth and bone as well. To repair this, the dentist will drill into the affected tooth and remove the decay. The dentist next cleans and disinfects the tooth. Then, the dentist will fill the cavity to prevent further problems and to protect the tooth so bacteria cannot enter.

For chips and cracks

Hard blows to the face, falls and biting into hard objects and food can damage teeth. This often occurs to top front teeth. For large issues, a crown or veneer may be necessary. However, a filling may be an effective dental restoration for smaller defects. Using a filling, the dentist can restore the tooth’s form and fill cracks.

The process

A filling is a minimally invasive dental restoration. Dentists can do one on a baby tooth or a permanent one. Except for with small cavities, the dentist will numb the tooth and area, so the patient feels comfortable. The dentist drills into the tooth, removes the decay and cleans the tooth thoroughly. The dentist then inserts the filling and checks the patient’s bite to make sure it is normal. The anesthetic should wear off in a few hours and the patient can resume eating.

Nothing to fear

Getting a filling should cause little or no pain. This dental restoration is important if you have a cavity or other small defects on a tooth. If you believe you are a candidate for a dental filling, call a dentist near you and schedule an appointment. You can be free of pain and enjoy your appearance again.
